Young learners can be confident that they are using a resource that was created in part by people just like them. Our next contributor we would like to present was one such student. Meet, Harjit Singh!
Harjit was responsible for many of this book's historical perspectives, namely: Punjabis in the USA, Canada and England. He provided in-depth data and interesting stories and facts that highlight the achievements of Punjabis in these regions.
"I grew up in Yuba City, but I did not know how to read or write Gurmukhi. Although I spoke Punjabi fluently, it wasn't until I enrolled in the Punjabi class at Yuba City High School that I learned to read and write. That helped me become more comfortable and confident in my identity as a child of Punjabi immigrants. I want all Punjabi children throughout California and the US to feel the same sense of connection to their ਵਿਰਸਾ (heritage). I also want non-Punjabis to have an opportunity to learn the Punjabi language and about the rich culture as well. Creating this textbook was the first step to achieving that and I wanted to contribute in any way that I could."
Harjit grew up in in Yuba City, CA. He earned a full-ride scholarship to UC Berkeley, where, while studying astrophysics and geophysics, he began to get involved with the larger Punjabi community. He engaged in Sikhi-inspired social justice work through Jakara Movement and Sikh Students' Association. His experience led Harjit to teach high school physics in Brooklyn, New York. There, he learned the power of youth work and youth organizing. Now, he has moved back to Yuba City to help his home community by being a full-time community organizer with Jakara Movement. Harjit has been instrumental to this book's success both through his contribution and his role in the community.
